THE BRECON
HOTEL REVIEW BY LAURA SANGSTER
WHEN: December 2025
WHERE: Adelboden, Switzerland
Switzerland has always conjured two images for me: grand palace hotels with impeccable service and the glamorous see and be seen atmosphere of places like St. Moritz. The Brecon is neither of those things, and that’s exactly why it stands out.
Set in the small alpine village of Adelboden, a town of fewer than 3,500 residents, The Brecon feels worlds away from
Switzerland’s more famous resort destinations. This is the kind of place where everyone seems to know everyone, and traditions are passed down through generations. There are no designer boutiques or luxury storefronts here. Instead, you’ll find family-owned shops, local artisans, bakers, and craftspeople who are deeply connected to their community and proud of their work.
The skiing reflects that same spirit. The slopes are refreshingly uncrowded, the atmosphere is welcoming rather than competitive, and the instructors are patient teachers who genuinely want to help you improve. Whether you’re a first-time skier or looking to build confidence on the mountain, Adelboden offers a far more relaxed experience than many of Europe’s marquee ski destinations.
The hotel itself is an oasis of warmth and calm. In fact, I almost hesitated to share my own photos because The Brecon’s photographer captures its essence so perfectly. Rich woods, layered textures, soft lighting, and subtle scents create a space that instantly feels comforting after a day outdoors. Every detail seems thoughtfully considered without ever feeling formal or pretentious.
And while skiing may be the main draw in winter, it’s hardly the only activity. Guests can soak in the heated outdoor pool while snow falls around them, hike to nearby waterfalls, explore the surrounding countryside, or even learn how to build an igloo with skilled local guides.
One of The Brecon’s most appealing features is its all-inclusive concept. A single nightly rate covers exceptional food and drink, allowing guests to simply settle in and enjoy. The kitchen showcases locally sourced ingredients through a creative rotating menu that changes with the seasons, turning every meal into something to look forward to.
The Brecon isn’t trying to be Switzerland’s grandest hotel or its most glamorous ski resort. Instead, it offers something increasingly rare: authenticity, warmth, and a genuine sense of place. While many travelers discover it during ski season, the hotel is just as captivating in spring and summer, when the mountains come alive in every shade of green, and the crisp alpine air invites long hikes and slow afternoons outdoors. For travelers seeking a quieter side of the Swiss Alps, regardless of the season, it’s a destination that leaves a lasting impression.
THE INSIDE SCOOP
WELLNESS // The Brecon’s intimate guest-only spa is designed for pure relaxation, featuring a sauna with panoramic Alpine views, a steam room, heated outdoor pool, and cozy relaxation spaces that invite you to slow down and soak in the mountain scenery.
CULINARY SCENE // The Brecon’s open kitchen and chef’s table create a wonderfully social dining experience that feels intimate, relaxed, and distinctly personal.
BEST FOR // Being adults only, The Brecon is an ideal choice for couples and groups of friends seeking a relaxed mountain retreat where exceptional food, outdoor adventure, thoughtful design, and a welcoming social atmosphere take center stage.
HOW DID THIS HOTEL MAKE ME FEEL // Connected to nature without sacrificing comfort. The Brecon strikes that rare balance where you can spend the day immersed in the mountains and return to a space where every detail has been thoughtfully considered
IF I DID THE SAME TRIP AGAIN, HERE’S WHAT I WOULD DO DIFFERENTLY // Stay longer. We spent three days in Adelboden, assuming that would be plenty in such a small town, but I wasn’t ready to leave. Four or five days would have been ideal, with at least one day dedicated entirely to the hotel: a leisurely breakfast, time by the pool, a massage, a good book, an afternoon nap, you get the picture!
