TIMELINE

HOW IT ALL WENT DOWN

1999

After a life-changing six-month tour through Central America, Laura knew the travel industry was where she belonged. Inspired by the vibrant cultures and stunning landscapes she experienced, she shared her stories with anyone who would listen, soon inspiring others to book their own adventures. Though she had business executives around who offered helpful advice, finding real mentorship in travel wasn’t easy. Many established agencies even told her to give up, warning that the internet would soon take over. Not one to be deterred, Laura pushed forward. She completed an intensive program at American Express Travel School, which gave her the foundation she needed to dive confidently into the travel world. This independent journey became a defining chapter in her path as an entrepreneur.

Laura launched her first website 16 months after starting her business, only to face the challenges of September 11 just six months later. Facing such a tough time early on only fueled her determination to succeed. Realizing how precious travel truly is, she started traveling internationally 1-2 times a month to build up her knowledge of hotels and destinations. Ironically, she had chosen to become a travel advisor over a flight attendant to avoid too much flying—but now she averages 50-60 flights a year!

In her first few years of business, the internet acquisition game was booming, and Laura got multiple offers to buy her company. She ended up selling her young business to a magazine publishing house—one of her favorite clients—where she helped launch an in-house villa rental company, showcasing a curated collection of luxury vacation homes in every issue. Two years later, when the publishing house changed hands, Laura jumped at the chance to buy back her travel agency. The business experience she gained was priceless, but she was thrilled to be back in charge and steer her agency forward.

Laura Sangster started out by focusing her agency’s marketing on the Caribbean, branding it as Caribbean Journey. As a young traveler and entrepreneur, she wanted to specialize in a region she could easily visit from the U.S. Right from the start, her guiding principle was simple: she only sells what she knows. However, as demand grew beyond the Caribbean, she rebranded the agency as The Journey Group Travel in 2011. Caribbean Journey continued to thrive as a main marketing branch, but with a growing team of advisors, The Journey Group quickly expanded, sending clients to over 40 destinations in the first few years after rebranding.

PRESENT DAY

The Journey Group Travel’s evolution into a boutique host travel company came about naturally. Most of the advisors on Laura’s team were referred by trusted connections who appreciated her support in starting or growing their own businesses. Laura and her team have traveled across countless countries and states, each trip adding unique experiences that have helped shape The Journey Group Travel’s growth.

FUTURE

Laura’s goal is to keep the company small so they have the time and focus on meeting each client’s unique needs and so she can continue offering one-on-one mentoring to her select group of independent advisors.
